About Me

I finished my art studies at the Amsterdam Academy in 1984. Since then I have been teaching in high schools, exposing my artwork and illustrating children's books. I love children's books and since my own childhood, I have dreamed of illustrating them. Especially fairytales with fantastic creatures and imaginative landscapes.

Occupation: artist, teacher of art, illustrator

About My artwork

My illustrations are mostly in water colours, combined with gouache. I love the flowing and transparancy of the colours and the surprising effects you can reach by painting in water colours. I try to keep a balance between realistic reproduction and painting effect. I do not wish to achieve a fotorealistic result. In my free work I like to experience with other materials. I use water colours/gouache, crayons, pastel acrylic paint and sometimes oil paint and mixed media.

My greatest source of inspiration are my three beautiful children. For instance Myrddin was my model for Prince Erie in the Trilogy: De Kroonverhalen (Crownstories): De tocht naar het Vuurpaleis, Het geheim van de Wisselvogels and Het tijdperk van de Schorpioen, written by Anna van Praag. Anouk was my model for Princess Mira and my Autumn Fairy. Sybren has posed many times when I didn't have a suited model.

I love to draw and paint animals and portraits. To capture the specific character of an animal or the features of a human face, and also their personal aura, is always a challenge.
